September is when this place switches back on. This year the whole region switched on at once: Communitech, the Accelerator Centre, Catalyst Commons, Den 1880, Velocity, campus, Workhaus, the Akatos house, and yes, Builders Club. Tech Week put 69 events on the public board in eight days and that’s only the ones that got listed. Add the rest of the month and September cleared 100 events in Waterloo Region. Here’s the recap.
Build From Here: Three Posts
The Week the Students + Community Built → — What the Tech Week numbers actually say. 69 known events, four run by the organizers, 65 by everyone else. Roughly 7,400 registrations, somewhere around 2,500 distinct people. The institutions showed up, but they were in the middle of the calendar, not on top of it. The student team built the frame and then got out of the way.
Mazin Al-Ani on Selling Before You Build → — First dinner of F26. Mazin co-founded Definite (YC S26), AI agents for back-office finance, and came to the table mid-way through his first enterprise sale. The thread that stuck: a soft yes is worse than a no. LOIs, loose design partners, and warm intros all let the other side avoid rejecting you. The signals that count are a stranger answering a cold message and money before the product exists.
The Things People Are Building in Waterloo → — Emylie Zamfir on the August DevHouse night: a mafia app, farm robots, a Pinterest for history, bare metal cloud, and a half dozen others with nothing connecting them except that someone built them.
Tech Week, Briefly
TL;DR: 69 known events in eight days, four run by the organizers, 65 by everyone else. Roughly 7,400 registrations and somewhere around 2,500 distinct people. Communitech, Den 1880, Catalyst Commons, the Accelerator Centre, campus, Workhaus, the Akatos house, and Builders Club all had full rooms, and the institutions were in the middle of the calendar, not on top of it. The student team built the frame and got out of the way. I wrote the full breakdown here: The Week the Students + Community Built →
Then Hack the North ran September 18–20: 1,000+ hackers, 353 projects, 36 hours. The region was at capacity for ten straight days. The numbers don’t do it justice — scroll their Instagram for a sense of how much fun that building is at 3 a.m.
Other angles on the week: BetaKit on the team behind it and the new flagship events, the Record’s day-one piece, and UW’s wrap, students building with ambition and energy. The full board is still up on Wygo.
The Rest of the Month Didn’t Slow Down
Tech Week ended and the regular calendar picked up without a gap.
Communitech had Tech x Women on September 22, the Tannery Event Centre open house on the 23rd, and a double-header on the 30th: IP 101 and the Go-To-Market Power Hour. The Accelerator Centre ran Guarding the Breakthrough, a physical security and insider-risk session for deep tech founders, on the 24th. Catalyst Commons kicked off the month with Workin’ 9 to 5 on September 1. Socratica‘s Sunday sessions ran through the term.
AI Show & Tell: Marketing Edition (Sep 23) — Product Marketing Alliance put marketers on the projector with the tools and workflows they actually use. Ten-minute demos, five minutes of questions, LLMs for content, research, competitor analysis, and copy. A Wednesday night that ran late. Hosted by Sushmita Banda, Neeraja Shanker, Sophia DeSantis, and Katie Owens.
AI x Code | AI Builders Waterloo (Sep 24) — The AI Builders series keeps climbing month over month. Prabal Gupta and Cole Van Vlack are building a real thing. AI x Money is next, October 29.
DevHouse Waterloo (Sep 28) — The monthly demo night. Bring what you’re building, take the projector, no pitches, no ranking.
KWIPS (Sep 21) and CivicTechWR (Season 9 hacknights Sep 23 and Sep 30, the 30th with guest speaker Elder Wanda Wilson) both ran out of Builders Club. KWLUG did their tech meeting at Davis Centre on the 14th and dinner at the Huether on the 30th. Workhaus ran a free coworking day on the 22nd. The DevKick crew took Battle of the Schools to Toronto on the 12th. Revenue Tuesdays (Sep 1, 15 & 29), Technical Wednesdays (Sep 2, 16 & 30), and Non-Technical Wednesdays (Sep 9 & 23) held through all of it.

That was September. Nobody ran it. The students built a calendar, every venue in the region said yes, and the regular cadence picked up the second Tech Week ended. Techtoberfest and the Barn Sprint are three weeks out. See you in the room.
